SD-508 (Vanagons from 83.5-86) has compression nut fittings on the ends and looks like the picture below.\u003c\/p\u003e \u003cp\u003eThe SD-510 (86-87 only) and SD-709 (86-91) have a similar design in the end fitting, but the head itself is a different thickness which throws off how the fittings attach.  Here is a picture of the two of them side by side for reference (see below)\u003c\/p\u003e \u003cp\u003eYou can see what I mean about the thickness of the \"head\" of the compressor.  The other difference between the two is that the SD-709 is a 7 cylinder compressor while the SD-508 and 510 are 5 cylinder.  The higher the cylinders the more efficient the compressor.  That being said as long as you have a good functioning system, either should work well.  You should try to order what you have for simplicity sake.  If you have any questions please feel free to email us.
